Epische liederen uit Karakalpakstan (Oezbekistan)

Dit trio komt uit Karakalpakstan, een autonome regio in Oezbekistan dat grenst aan Turkmenistan. Het bekende Aralmeer behoort deels tot deze regio. Al deze artiesten zijn bakshi, oftewel epenzangers. Deze traditie, waarin epische verhalen en gedichten worden voorgedragen begeleid door muziek, gaat terug tot de 13e eeuw.

Het vergt een enorme kennis van zaken om al die verhalen en gedichten uit het hoofd voor te dragen. De zang wordt gekenmerkt door een hoge mate van
boventoon- en ondertoontechnieken. Hoofdzakelijk treden bakshi solo op, maar dit trio is uitzonderlijk omdat ze ook samen stukken in deze stijl voordragen.

Salamat is een fantastische muzikant die de qobuz (een soort knieviool) bespeelt en zijn traditionele epische liederen in het Karakalpaks, de taal van deze minderheid in Oezbekistan, voordraagt. Het vergt niet alleen een grondige kennis van het enorme repertoire vol epische poëzie, geschiedenis en verhalen die generaties lang mondeling zijn overgeleverd, maar ook van het gebruik een reeks complexe muzikale modi en het talent om te improviseren. In 2015 ontving hij de Unesco-prijs voor de instandhouding van de muzikale erfenis van Karakalpakstan.

Gulistan werd door haar vader vanaf haar elfde ingewijd in de geheimen van het bespelen van de dutar (langhalsluit) en de zangtraditie. Zij werd gegrepen door de muziektraditie, met name die van de bakshi, en studeerde van 2007-2010 aan het Nukus College voor Kunst & Cultuur. In 2012 werd zij uitgeroepen tot Zangeres van het Jaar.

Azat Pirnazarov tenslotte is een zeker niet minder ervaren bespeler van de ghijak, ook een soort knieviool. Hij begeleidt daarmee vele muzikanten in zijn eigen land.

Since she was 11 Gulistan has been initiated by her father in the secrets of playing the dutar (longnecked lute) and the vocal tradition. Very interested in the musical tradition of her country, especially the bakshi style, she studied at the Nukus College for Art & Culture from 2007-2010. In 2012 she was awarded the title of Female Vocalist of the Year.
