Op 21 maart 2020, inderdaad op Newroz, stond de Afghaanse band Safar gepland in De X. Helaas gooide corona roet in het eten. Maar er is sindsdien veel meer gebeurd. De Taliban zijn bijvoorbeeld weer sinds augustus 2021 aan het bewind gekomen in Afghanistan. Dat zorgde ervoor dat een groot deel van de muzikanten van het Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM), gevestigd te Kaboel, uiteindelijk naar Portugal geëvacueerd werden. Daar wordt momenteel het ANIM in ballingschap opgebouwd, zodat de jonge generatie muzikanten de rijke Afghaanse muzikale tradities kunnen voortzetten.
Het ANIM Ensemble wordt geleid door Ustad Mohammad Murad Sarkhosh, dezelfde grootmeester die ook Safar leidde, en die al meer dan 15 jaar de fakkel van de Afghaanse muziek brandende probeert te houden. Sinds 2006 is hij de rector van de ANIM, en geeft hij daar ook les. Nu zet hij zijn werk dus voort in ballingschap, vanuit Portugal. Naast hem maken nog 4 jonge talentvolle leerlingen deel uit van het ANIM Ensemble, waaronder de jonge rubab-maestro Ramez Safar. ANIM Ensemble laat horen hoe prachtig en divers die Afghaanse muziektraditie is. De klassieke muziek is zeer verwant aan de Noordindiase klassieke muziek, waarmee vooral sinds de 19e eeuw veel uitwisseling is. Zo is de Indiase tabla deel uit gaan maken van de Afghaanse muziek en is de Afghaanse rubab in India geëvolueerd tot de sarod. Naast de klassieke muziek uit zuidwest-Afghanistan speelt de groep ook soefi-muziek en stukken uit het Afghaanse deel van Badakshan.

Passionate traditional, sufi and classical music from Afghanistan
On 21 March 2020, on Newroz indeed, a concert of Safar was planned in De X. Unfortunately it was canceled due to corona. Since then a lot has changed. In Afghanistan the Taliban came back to power in August 2021. This resulted in a lot of musicians from the Afghan National Institute of Music (ANIM) in Kabul being evacuated to Portugal. There the ANIM in exile is being built at the moment, so a younger generation of musicians is able to continue the rich heritage of Afghan musical traditions.
Ustad Mohammad Murad Sarkhosh is the leader of the ANIM Ensemble. He is the same maestro that led the band Safar. Already more than 15 years he is trying to keep the musical traditions of his country alive. Since 2006 he is the director of ANIM. He also teaches at this music institute, and now he is continuing his work in exile. Apart from him the ANIM Ensemble consists of 4 young and talented pupils from the institute, amongst them the young rumba master Ramez Safar.. The ANIM Ensemble shows us how beautiful and versatile Afghan music is. The classical music is closely connected to the North-Indian classical music. The Indian tabla has taken its place in the Afghan music en the Afghan rubab evolved into the Indian sarod. Apart from classical music from Southeast Afghanistan the ANIM Ensemble also plays sufi music, and pieces from the Badakshan region in Afghanistan.
