De X: Vanessa Kourtesi Rebetiko Quartet

Rebetika wordt beschouwd als de 'blues' uit Griekenland, het is de Griekse stadsmuziek bij uitstek. Het ontstond in de jaren twintig met name in havensteden als Thessaloniki en Athene (Piraeus), met thema's als ontheemding, eenzaamheid en het gemis van geliefden. Inmiddels heeft de muziek echter wel een verandering doorgemaakt, waarbij de bouzouki een centrale plaats kreeg.

Vanessa wordt begeleid door een toptrio. Vangelis Koxylis heeft op alle prestigieuze podia in Thessaloniki gespeeld en speelde o.a. met zanger Semeli Papavasileiou en als solist naast de Turkse kemenche-meester Derya Turkan. Thodoris Zarkias komt ook uit Griekenland maar woont in Londen. Hij is een zeer veelzijdig improvisator en speelde met artiesten als Savina Yannatou, London Improvisors Orchestra en Maggy Nichols.

Asterios Varveris tenslotte komt uit de rebetika-hoek aangezien zijn vader ook rebetika-artiest was. Maar daarnaast heeft hij ook een rock- als een klassieke achtergrond. Afgestudeerd aan de afdeling Muziekwetenschappen en Kunst aan de Universiteit van Macedonië, is hij momenteel een doctoraal student aan de afdeling Turkse muziek van Codarts in Rotterdam.

emotional rebetiko from Greece

Vanessa Kourtesi is a singer and bouzouki player from Athens, who lives in Rotterdam since 2017, when she started her study at Codarts, the conservatory of Rotterdam. She has performed in many Athenian music scenes and taverns singing rebetiko music and traditional songs and has collaborated with many musicians of the genre.

Rebetiko is often refereed to a the Greek 'blues'. It is urban music, originating in the twenties, especially in cities like Thessaloniki and Athens (Piraeus). These early, heartbreaking songs, often played on violin and santour (dulcimer), were mainly about the horrors of being a refugee: displacement, loneliness, and the missing of loved ones. 

Nowadays the music has changed somewhat. The bouzouki took over the central place from the violin, and the lyrics became less rough and more generally accepted. Vanessa is backed by a great trio. Vangelis Koxylis appeared in the prestigious stages in Thessaloniki and collaborated, amongst others, with Greek singer Semeli Papavasileiou and he featured as a soloist alongside kemenche master Derya Turkan.

Thodoris Zarkias is also from Greece but lives in London. He is a versatile improvisor and played with artists like Savina Yannatou, London Improvisors Orchestra and Maggy Nichols. Asterios Varveris grew up with rembetiko since his father performs this idiom too. Besides this he practised and performed electric guitar playing mostly blues rock music as well as he studied contemporary harmony. He also studied classical guitar. His passion and dedication to music led him to succeed the exams for the department of music science and art at the university of Macedonia. Moreover, Asterios is a master degree student at Codarts university in Rotterdam studying in the Turkish department.
