Triple X: Neco Novellas, Jan Wouter Oostenrijk en Babak Maddah

Neco Novellas komt uit Mozambique en is een zeer getalenteerde zanger, gitarist en componist. In zijn muziek combineert hij invloeden uit lokale Afrikaanse muziek, westers klassieke muziek, folk, jazz en improvisatie. Zijn nieuwsgierigheid naar nieuwe geluiden heeft hem al doen samenwerken met veel artiesten, waaronder the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Tanja Kross en Ernst Reijseger. Zijn nieuwe plaat Chasing Traces is net dit jaar uitgekomen.

Nog een gitarist, maar met een heel ander verhaal, is Jan Wouter Oostenrijk. Vanuit zijn passie voor de Arabische wereld ontwikkelde hij muziek met eigen gebouwde gitaren waarmee hij, geënt op traditie, microtonale klanken succesvol weet te integreren met jazz, blues en roots. Voor zijn laatste album We are connected heeft Jan Wouter extra fretten tussen de gewone fretten op de hals van de gitaar aangebracht, zodat het instrument ook kwarttonen kan spelen zoals we dat tegenkomen in Noord-Afrikaanse muziek en Midden-Oosters maqam spel. In de westerse muziek is de halve toon de kleinste afstand tussen de tonen, denk maar aan de witte en de zwarte toetsen van de piano. Kwarttonen liggen daar nog weer tussen in. De Nederlandse Traveling East tour van Jan Wouter Oostenrijk is mede tot stand gekomen dankzij bijdragen van het Norma fonds, AFK fonds en het Fonds voor Geld- & Effectenhandel.

Babak Maddah tenslotte is een Iraanse percussionist die zich toelegt op een hedendaagse combinatie van Iraans slagwerk met Afrikaanse, Arabische en Europese percussie. Zelf afkomstig uit Zuid-Iran, waar de invloeden uit de Arabische wereld en Afrika duidelijk te horen zijn, laat hij op zijn vorig jaar verschenen CD Destiny horen hoe die combinatie uitpakt: een uitgebalanceerd geluid waarin invloeden uit de verschillende tradities en jazz op organische wijze samenkomen. Babak Maddah studeerde af aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en speelde in het verleden ondermeer met Ibrahim Maalouf.

This year De X is already 30 years old! XXX in Roman figures. In this context De X presents today TRIPLE X: an afternoon with 3 exceptional solo artists, all living in The Netherlands. Every artist will play around 30 minutes. Neco Novellas comes from Mozambique and is a very talented singer, guitar player and composer. In his music he combines influences from the local African music, western classical music, folk, jazz and improvisation. His curiosity and his search for new sounds made him work together with a lot of artists, like the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Tanja Kross and Ernst Reijseger. His record Chasing Traces was just released this year.

Another guitar player, but with a completely different story, is Jan Wouter Oostenrijk. Because of his passion for Arabic culture, he developed and built his own guitars. With these he knows how to succesfully integrate microtonal sounds witt jazz, blues and roots. On his latest album We are connected Jan Wouter put extra frets in between the usual ones on the neck of the guitar, so the instrument is able to play quarter tones, like is common in the music from North Africa and Middle-East. In Western music the smallest interval is the half tone (like the black and white keys on a piano).

Babak Maddah is an Iranian percussionist who specializes in combining Iranian percussion with African, Arabic and European percussion. He comes from Southern Iran, where the influences from the Arabic world and Africa are clear. On his last CD Destiny he shows how this combination works: it's a balanced sound in which the influences from the different traditions, together with jazz, merge together in an almost organic way. Babak Maddah graduated at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and in the past played together, amongst others, with Ibrahim Maalouf.
