Tango Astillero wordt wereldwijd door de meest prestigieuze zalen gezien als een van de fakkeldragers van de nieuwe tango uit Buenos Aires. In 2019 deden ze al eens De X aan, en met veel succes. Dit sextet uit Argentinië speelt de tango met enorm veel pit en in de geest van anno nu. Astillero reflecteert de passie, rebellie en woede van een verwoeste stad, want de groep werd geboren uit de Argentijnse crisis van 2001. Ruim 13 jaar geleden was hun eerste toernee in NL al een sensatie met concerten in toonaangevende zalen zoals Tropentheater en Rasa, en later ook op het North Sea Jazz Festival.

Nog steeds weet Tango Astillero de wetten van de tango opnieuw uit te vinden en het genre in een nieuw jasje te steken. De structuur wordt door de zes musici volledig ontrafeld met als resultaat een geheel nieuwe, ruwe en energieke tangovorm die ontroert, schrijnt, gevoelig is maar tegelijk rebels, en altijd vol vuur. Alle composities zijn van eigen hand en de songs raken je in het hart. De BBC omschrijft de groep als ''the continuation of Piazzolla, absolutely virtuous, crazy and fantastic''.
Kortom, Tango Astillero brengt vernieuwende tango die scherp en intens is, ruw en heftig, een afspiegeling van het heden. Tango die de oneerlijkheid en de tegenstellingen in de stadsjungle van Buenos Aires verklankt. Een stijl die knalt en die de groep zelf zo omschrijft: ‘it kicks, breaks, hurts and jumps’.

Na 17 Europese tournees in de afgelopen jaren en een veelbesproken showcase op de Womex in 2008, is de groep flink op weg een grote internationale schare fans op te bouwen

Celebrated as the new tango of Buenos Aires on the most prestigious stages of the world, Astillero reflects the passion, rebellion and fury of a city devastated. From the Argentine crisis of 2001 surged this exceptionally beautiful, sensual and yet rabid music that the BBC proclaimed as “The continuation of Piazzolla, absolutely virtuous, crazy and fantastic”.

In 2019 Astillero played at De X, and with a lot of success. Their first tour in The Netherlands was already 13 years ago, with shows in prestigious venues like Tropentheater (Amsterdam) and Rasa (Utrecht) and later on they also performed at North Sea Jazz Festival.

The sound of Astillero is forceful, vertiginous, breathtaking, raw yet sophisticated: a rollercoaster ride of throbbing accents modulating into earth shattering pianissimos and beyond.

Yet this wild sound is entirely hand-made, free of any gimmicks, 100% acoustic: the sound of just wood and strings, brought to searing life by an acute sense for translating the experience of 21st century urban life into new music, built on a solid traditional foundation of Buenos Aires’ tango.

The orchestra, though featuring the typical instruments of a classic Tango ensemble (two bandoneons, violin, piano, cello, double bass) is a tango formation that has nothing to do with the ‘tango’ of our collective conciousness. Astillero proposes a completely new vision of tango, incisive and intense, rough and violent, reflecting the times we live in.

From their all-original instrumental compositions, emerges a Tango that sounds as Buenos Aires sounds today. The way they play their music reflects the incongruities and madness of this urban jungle; it kicks, breaks, hurts, jumps.

With seventeen European tours in recent years, and a much-talked-about showcase at WOMEX 08 in Sevilla, Astillero are now fast building an international following. The secret is out, and the word is spreading!
