Rina Das Baul is een van de meest gerespecteerde en bekende Baul zangers uit West-Bengalen, India. Bauls zijn rondtrekkende muzikanten en dichters, en Rina komt ook uit een Baul-familie dichtbij Bolpur, de geboorteplaats van de befaamde Rabindranath Tagore, die zelf ook een Baul was. Van haar opa leerde Rina van jongs af aan de teksten, ritmes en muziekinstrumenten. Ook leerde hij haar om de nuances van de muziek en de Baul filosofie te begrijpen.

De Baul traditie stamt uit de vroege 8e eeuw en heeft invloeden in zich vanuit het Sahajiya Boeddhisme, Centraal-Aziatische en Midden-Oosterse Soefisme, en Bengaals Hindoeïsme. Bauls identificeren zich immers niet met enige georganiseerde religie, kaste-systeem, bepaalde goden, tempels of heilige plekken. Bauls geloven dat (een) God in het fysieke menselijke lichaam huist.

De Bauls worden niet alleen bewonderd voor hun vrijheid van denken en doen, maar ook voor hun muziek en dichtkunst. Muziek, zang, dichtkunst en dans staan allen in het teken van de zoektocht naar spirituele bevrijding en de relatie tussen mens en god. Hun devotionele liederen voeren minstens terug naar de 15e eeuw, toen ze voor het eerst
verschenen in de Bengaalse literatuur. De teksten passen zich continue aan de hedendaagse situatie.

In het begin was het optreden voor Rina zeer lastig, als vrouw in een patriarchale samenleving. Ze kreeg veel over zich heen maar ze hield vol, want niets gaf haar meer voldoening dan de muziek. Haar man, ook een Baul-muzikant, heeft haar altijd gesteund. Vandaag de dag is Rina Das een bekende vertegenwoordiger van de Baul, en als vrouwelijke
artiest een inspiratie voor velen. Ze heeft prestigieuze onderscheidingen in India ontvangen en heeft inmiddels de halve wereld rondgereisd.

Ze wordt begeleid door 2 artiesten: Purnendu Das is haar zoon. Hij s een jonge Baul en multi-instrumentalist op khamak, dubki, dotara en khol. Als lid van zijn moeder’s ensemble heeft hij inmiddels met veel internationale artiesten samengewerkt. Arpan Thakur Chakraborty is een traditionele multi-instrumentalist uit Calcutta. Hij speelt dotara,
kendri, banjo en andere snaarinstrumenten. Hij heeft met veel baul-meesters gespeeld, in India als
internationaal.

Female voice of the legendary Baul traveling musicians

Rina Das Baul is one of the most respected and well-known Baul singers from West Bengal. Bauls are traveling musicians and Rina comes from a Baul family near Bolpur, the birthplace of the famous Rabindranath Tagore, who was a Baul himself. Rina learned the lyrics, rhythms and musical instruments from her grandfather from an early age, and also taught her to understand the nuances of music and also the Baul philosophy.

The Baul tradition dates back to the early 8th century AD and developed through the interweaving of threads from Sahajiya Buddhism, Central Asian and Middle Eastern Sufism, and Bengali Hinduism. Bauls do not identify with any organized religion, caste system, particular deities, temples, or sacred places. Their focus is on the importance of a person's physical body as the place where God dwells.

The Bauls are admired for this freedom from convention as much as for their music and poetry. Poetry, music, song and dance of the Baul are dedicated to the search for man's relationship with God and spiritual liberation. Their devotional songs can be traced back to the fifteenth century, when they first appeared in Bengali literature. The language of the songs is constantly being modernized, giving them contemporary relevance. This powerful form of music has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Rina initially received little support to pursue music or even perform on stage. Corrections and insults were part of her everyday life as a female performer in a patriarchal society. But nothing could keep her away from the music. Rina's husband, who is a musician himself, has been very supportive on her road to success.

Today, Rina Das is a renowned representative of the Baul, whose work as a female voice is an inspiration to many. She has received prestigious awards from the Government of India for her work and has appeared on television and radio many times. Rina Das has traveled and performed regularly in and outside of West Bengal and India, as well as abroad. Rina hopes that through her music, people will find the resilience they need to endure the difficulties and uncertainties of the time.

She is accompanied by two musicians: Purnendu Das is her son. He is a young Baul and multi-instrumentalist on khamak, dubki, dotara and khol. As a permanent member of his mother Rina Das Baul's ensemble, he has worked with various international artists and performed at WOMEX in 2022.

Arpan Thakur Chakraborty is a traditional multi-instrumentalist from Kolkata who plays dotara, kendri, banjo and other stringed instruments. He has a long history of playing with Baul masters in India and internationally.
